Sad clowns How the pandemic shattered the world of children’s entertainment

Sad clowns and desperate DJs: How the pandemic shattered the world of children’s entertainment

clown make-up has firmly been kept locked in the cupboard over the past few months.

When you think of a more traditional type of children’s entertainer you’d probably think of a party clown doing tricks, telling jokes, and just being a bit silly.

For Alan Paget, 55, more commonly known to the little ones as Mr T.Ricks, the clown costume has been hanging in the closet hidden away for quite some time.

Alan, from Maesteg, has been in the business for 29 years and couldn’t really imagine doing anything else.

His act sees traditional performances such as Punch and Judy along with classic children’s show favourites.

Alan said: "We try and keep it as traditional as possible. It’s old-school really. Since lockdown I have done two shows since March. People are scared to book things. The parents don’t want to have 25 or 30 kids running around.

"I want to work. I invested a lot of money in personal protective equipment (PPE) and all the equipment.

"I got everything thinking: ‘Right, I’m PPE-proof and will be protected’ but people are just not ringing. My phone is unused."

It’s been a sad time for the entertainment industry (Image: Rob Browne/WalesOnline)

Alan said there has been an "unbelievable" difference in demand for entertainment this year and the industry as a whole has suffered – not just children’s entertainers.

It’s been a difficult time with a phone that doesn’t ring and a diary that has empty pages – and this would usually be his busiest time of year.

"Normally Halloween is booked out," he said. "The only show I did have booked was cancelled. For Christmas I have one date in December – and I still don’t know if that will go ahead. Normally by the start of September the month of December is 98% booked. I would do three to four shows in a day."

When it comes to how the lack of entertainment has affected the children Alan said he thinks the little ones are "durable".

He says most of the kids understand you can’t have parties because of the virus but he worries there may be a knock-on effect in terms of the future demands for parties.

He said if children get used to doing things like having tea parties with families there may be a decline in demand for entertainers and traditional parties in the future.

"I think parents will think: ‘We didn’t have one last year, so let’s not have one this year’. It will have a knock-on effect.

"I think the entertainment industry will take two to three years to recover and I don’t think it will recover to what it was pre-Covid."

Even though there is a concern around the future for the industry, it’s clear that the passion for performing still remains.

For Alan his mobility limits the type of work he is able to do and, in all honesty, he doesn’t want to stop raising the spirits of little ones.

Talking about the future he said: "I can’t really do anything else – I have mobility issues now.

"It’s the only thing I can really do – I pull up, sit with the kids for a few hours, and then I’m back in the car and I’m home.

"For me to get up and go to a factory and stand for a long period of time would be hard for me.

"The next thing for me would be retirement but I wouldn’t want that.

"This lockdown has given me time to read books and more things about magic.

"I love entertaining the kids – and the magic."

Nice reviews

Hi

Here are just a few of my recent reviews on my mr.t.ricks fan page on Facebook

Mr T Rick’s is without doubt the best entertainer for keeping children and adults entertained for the whole of his show. If you haven’t had the experience of watching him entertain you need to do so. Best I’ve ever seen keep it up Mr T ricks

We got married at the Coed-y-Mwstwr Hotel on Saturday 29th December 2018 and we had twenty plus children in attendance!

We booked Mr.T.Ricks and he didn’t disappoint. All of the children loved the entertainment (and so did the adults) 😃

Would definitely recommend, especially to give children something to do during your wedding speeches!

Thank you, Danielle & Les x

Easter Egg Hunt @ Porthcawl

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, for those who came to the Easter Egg Hunt in Porthcawl you would have seen me and the Punch & Judy booth near the Museum. For the duration of the event I was offering free glitter tattoos for those on the hunt for the special eggs, and it was very busy indeed.

During this time my good friend Idris the Dragon was in the booth generally causing mayhem by barking at dogs, and talking to anyone who would listen! He made up for his trouble making by offering out free chocolate eggs to those who were still looking for the special ones hidden around the town.

Idris was also chosen this year by the Easter Bunny to hand out a star prize to one very lucky child. We tried to get a photo of the Easter Bunny, but Idris still managed to Photobomb it! – he’s such a pesky little dragon!

We had a great time down in Porthcawl and will hopefully be back down there later in the season.

Bye for now!

The Broken Wand Ceremony for Viv Davies (Mysteeny)

Hi everyone,

You may have noticed me on BBC1 last night in full slap and motley. However, I was not out performing, but instead paying my last respects to a good friend and fellow magician – Viv Davies a.k.a. Mysteeny.
Viv DaviesViv’s funeral was being filmed by the BBC for the programme “A very Welsh Undertaking” and, at the request of his widow, all Magicians and entertainers attending were asked to arrive in bright colours, or their performing attire.

Mr T Ricks service

As a Magician the service also included a section known as the Broken Wand Ceremony. This tribute, led by our joint friend and fellow conjurer David Holmes (Sebastian), featured the wand belonging to Viv being ceremoniously broken, to symbolize the end of Viv’s performance, and that his true magic may continue in the hearts and minds of those who knew him.

Only a small portion featured in the programme and the full service can be read here for those who are interested. It is a fascinating read, and one which I have always found to be very powerful.

The service concluded with all Magicians in attendance providing our final farewell to a fellow conjurer: a guard of honour with Magic wands held high.

If you would like to see the full programme, it is currently on the BBC iplayer and can be viewed for the next few days here.

Mr.T.RIcks & Friends.

Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know that I appear to be experiencing problems with my landline telephone number and some people are having trouble getting through. Obviously with lots of parties, events and fetes coming up in the next few weeks this is not ideal!

While we solve this problem, in the meantime you can reach me on my mobile number which is:

07976 482273

Hope this helps, and look forward to hearing from you.

Bye for now.

Mr. T. Ricks.
